Statement
I am a fibre artist and a designer who is based on craftmanship.
My background of BFA and MFA as a student of fibre and history of art in South Korea helped me broaden my perspective on art and design and supported me in developing various technics. I graduated MA in textile course from the Royal College of Art in London. Through studying textile in RCA, I got exceptional visual communication skills and confidence in colour and pattern design with various soft materials. My final project in RCA focused on multiple colours, patterns, structures and textures to express ‘Movement’ images such as rhythmical and dynamical moods on textiles.
My work, based on weaving, is an amalgamation of historic and contemporary design, using traditional and unique materials. I adore historical textiles and love contemporary off-beat textile art; therefore, I work on achieving something that combines these ideas in a cleverly skilled way. I pursue my style and build on what experience I have gathered and gained from past design, technique and knowledge.
Most of my work explores rhythm, repetition, links, and spatial relationships between structures and space. I explore the rhythm of repetition and pattern, complex colour contrasts, textured surfaces, and the feel of the materials moving in my hand. I am inspired by my experiences, social issue, and natural phenomena. I create with a desire to explore and satisfy my artistic needs and to present and promote a way forward in textiles.

Experiences
2021 - 2022
Researcher, Seoul centre for arts and culture education service at Sangmyung University, Seoul
: I connected various art fields such as Korean traditional music, dance, theatre, craft, design, photography, film and animation with public education curricula to promote culture and arts education and cultivate creative talents, personalities and emotional development for students. Also, under the COVID-19 situation, I worked on planning unique performances, developing online content for distance learning, holed a virtual exhibition and designing UI such as an application and a website.
2021 - 2022
Lecturer, Textile art department at Sangmyung University, Seoul
: I lectured ‘Mixed-media’ for undergraduate for a semester about how to experiment with different materials through mixed-use of various art techniques to understand the physical properties of various materials. I created teaching materials for the lecture, prepared for tutorials and seminars, marked students’ work, and directed teaching.
2019 - 2022
Creative director, Glory Surface Design Ltd(woven and printed textile design studio), London
: I created two-dimensional woven and printed textile designs for clothing, furnishings, interior decoration and household items. I generated design ideas from reference materials and current trends in this role.
2019
Intern at Wallace#Sewell (woven and printed textile design company) London
: I worked on processing retail orders, managing stock, proofreading weaving lifting plans, conducting and presenting merchandising research, quality control and processing scarves, serving customers, assisting with data entry, sitting in on trade appointments and design meetings.
2018 - 2019
Design intern at Steventai(womenswear fashion designer studio) London
: T-shirts design for Summer project 2019, London fashion week SS19, Portrait positive campaign
: To present a collection for London fashion week, I provided preliminary concept designs, joined the whole design process and analysed the evaluation of ongoing design projects. Also, I worked on essential tasks for designing and creating garments involving pattern cutting, machine sewing, fabric cutting and flat drawings, working with trims and making finishings for the Summer project 2019.
2017
PRACTITIONERS, CraftTech Hybrid: Frameworks for Smart Photonic Materials, a collaboration between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Institute of Textiles and Clothing and RCA Textiles, London
: The workshops set out to investigate hybrid design frameworks utilising photonic textiles and polymeric optical fibres (POFs) as mediums to explore interdisciplinary approaches. The design objective for my group was to develop an interactive communication platform that would utilise the POs to transmit messages to users. Initial experiments involved hand etching and singular messages. Further developments involved laser etching and two messages illuminated via alternate light sources. The flexible POF panel can be applied onto clothing to transform conventionally passive clothing into interactive platforms.
